Everywhere you go in Asia Pacific you come across the huge social strains caused by the speed of economic development and change. In China, 300 million have been lifted out of poverty in a generation and many have moved from the countryside to the cities, and now the cities are full and re-development means that settled and stable urban communities are also being uprooted in favour of denser or just newer homes. This short film beautifully captures some of the pain of this. “There is no ‘why’ in China” was a comment that stuck with me.
We have chronicled some of these issues in our Words of a Generation film series. My previous blog post on the series is here.
